EqualWeb alternative — source-level WCAG auditing

Last updated

The short version

EqualWeb sells an accessibility widget plus a substantial expert-services arm. Both layers apply fixes client-side — EqualWeb says so explicitly — so your source files are never modified. adasafe reports the WCAG 2.2 failures in your own code and gives you fixes to apply there. On price the two are closer than you might expect; the difference is where the fix ends up.

What EqualWeb does

You add one line of code before the closing body tag. The widget renders an accessibility menu with user profiles and, per EqualWeb, remediates 80+ common WCAG 2.2 issues in real time. Their own FAQ answers the architecture question directly: asked whether the widget changes your source code, EqualWeb answers “No. The EqualWeb widget runs as an external layer and applies fixes in real time through the browser DOM, so your original source files are never modified.”

The detail worth knowing is that their premium managed tier works the same way. EqualWeb describes it as “client-side code remediation — expert and AI-driven fixes applied on the client side — so assistive technology works, with no source-code changes required.” Buying the expert tier buys better fixes in the same place.

Their audit product is different, and genuinely so: a manual evaluation by certified specialists that delivers remediation guidance your developers act on, plus a VPAT/ACR. That is real expert work, priced per template from $4,800 a project.

Credit where it is due

EqualWeb's current marketing is more honest than the category's reputation. Their site now states plainly that “a widget alone is not a compliance strategy,” and answers “Is an automated accessibility widget enough for full ADA and WCAG compliance?” with “No. Automated tools resolve many issues instantly, but full conformance also requires human review.”

That is correct, and it is the same thing we say about our own scanner. If you are comparing vendors on candour, EqualWeb's 2026 positioning is not the problem.

Where overlays sit in litigation

EqualWeb is named in the Overlay Fact Sheet, the community document signed by over a thousand accessibility practitioners.

More concretely: a class settlement approved by a US federal court in June 2023 includes a “No Overlays” term providing that overlay solutions “such as those currently provided by companies such as AccessiBe, AudioEye, EqualWeb, UsableNet Assistive, and UserWay will not solely suffice” to make the defendant's digital properties accessible.

Be precise about what that is. It is a term the parties negotiated and the court approved as part of a settlement — not a judicial finding that EqualWeb fails WCAG. What it does show is how plaintiffs' counsel treat overlays when they get to write the remedy.

How the two compare

  • Where the fix lives. EqualWeb: the browser DOM, for both the widget and the managed tier. adasafe: your source, applied by you.
  • Metering. EqualWeb meters by pages, with unlimited pageviews — $39/mo for 100 pages up to $169/mo for 100,000. adasafe is flat at $39, $129 or $299 a month. At the entry tier the prices are the same; pick on architecture, not cost.
  • Human testing. EqualWeb sells certified manual audits from $4,800 a project. adasafe does not offer manual expert auditing at all.
  • Evidence. adasafe publishes a public, timestamped, tamper-evident proof record as part of the subscription. EqualWeb includes VPAT/ACR with its audit product.

When EqualWeb is the better choice

If you need a certified manual audit with a VPAT for procurement, EqualWeb sells that and we do not. If you have no way to deploy a code change, a widget is installable and a fix list is not. And if you want interface controls — font sizing, contrast profiles, reading aids — presented to your visitors, that is what a widget does and a scanner does not.

What adasafe does not do

  • No manual expert audit, no VPAT service. Automated testing catches a subset of WCAG failures; the rest need a person.
  • No visitor-facing accessibility menu — we change nothing on your live site.
  • No compliance guarantee or warranty. A proof record is evidence of diligence, not immunity.
